When Jaguar is started, by default HOME
display always appears first. HOME is one of the Jaguar's spectrum displays
presenting detailed spectrum information for the played frequency in the
current playback file. HOME is also the only spectrum display available for
JAGUAR LITE users.
JAGUAR PRO users can use also EXTENDED spectrum displays which contain "offset
history" produced by Jaguar SCANS (see SCANS help for more details).
When you start JAGUAR for the first time, or make a RESET for the playback
settings, the INFOBOX will be displayed on top of the HOME screen (see INFOBOX
for more details). If you want to jump directly to the playback mode, click
LIVE or OPEN, and close the INFOBOX. The HOME screen shows the spectrum of the
currently-active frequency in the waterfall mode. The time span of the display
covers the time included in the file behind playback. Note that also in the
LIVE mode, there is always an active 10-minute playback buffer file (8 minutes
if SAMPLING rate 2000 is used). A small white circle ("runspot") shows the
location in the currently-played file. You can also attach a flag showing the
exact frequency played pointing to that circle (TOOLBAR > SETTINGS >
GRAPHICS+ > FLAGSPOT). You can left-click the mouse to jump into any time
point / offset within that file.
Note that the spectrum line locations (exact offset positions) on the screen
are not correct if you have not calibrated JAGUAR, or the previous calibration
is no more accurate. To re-calibrate, see KALIBRATE help for details.
If you move the mouse cursor to the left edge, you will see the TIMEFRAME
showing the recorded HH'MM (hours, minutes) areas on that day (see TIMEFRAME
help for details).
If you move the mouse cursor to the right edge, you will see the ZOOMFRAME
showing your current ZOOM position. You can change the zoom level with a mouse
click, and this enter the offset history screens (= EXTENDED spectrum
displays).
By default, JAGUAR creates a preview of the spectrum ("HOMESCAN") on the HOME
screen when you tune in to a new frequency. HOMESCAN is a sparse spectrum
display that shows the skeleton of the offsets found on that frequency. This
preview uses a considerable amount of CPU and I/O resources. So, if you do not
want to waste your computer’s resources and you do not need this feature,
it can be disabled via STATUSBAR > Green S button > untick HOMESCAN. If
you keep HOMESCAN enabled, you can change the resolution of the HOMESCAN by
changing the SPEED value (see HOMESCAN help for more details).
The maximum offset area that can be shown is 500 Hz on both sides of the tuned
frequency, and your spectrum span is limited only by the screen resolution, so,
on low-resolution displays, it may not be possible to see the full 1-kHz span.
Also, in any case, if you want to see beyond +/- 500 Hz, you must tune in to
the adjacent frequency. You can zoom this offset span using SPECTOR zoom (=
TOOLBAR > SPECTOR, see SPECTOR for details).
If you prefer a horizontal presentation of HOME, you can use the keyboard key
combination of ALT-V. ALT- V toggles the vertical and horizontal orientation.
The horizontal display shows a narrower area for offsets but, in turn, the
spectrum lines (in time) are aligned nicely with the PLAYBAR's progress bar. In
the vertical display mode, you can use FLAGS to see listed offsets (see FLAGS
help for details), however in the horizontal mode there is only a limited
possibility to show offsets and the FLAGS feature is not available.
The most-often-used JAGUAR functions are scrolling in time and scrolling
frequencies, and there are ample ways to do so for both. Whenever "traveling in
time" (or on the dial), the spectrum and/or the "runspot" is refreshed
automatically.
JAGUAR PRO ONLY
The EXTENDED spectrum displays (EXTENDED and EXTENDED DAY) show the offset
history data if the user has run any of the following: MANUAL SCAN, AUTOSCAN,
or MONITOR (see SCANS help for details). If there is no offset history (scan
data) available, you will see just empty time frames. You can start MANUAL SCAN
(see MANUAL SCAN help) to run a short scan to see how the offset history data
is displayed on the following screens:
• EXTENDED displays the offset data listed sequentially from top to
bottom
• EXTENDED DAY displays the offset data aligned within a 24-hour frame
The EXTENDED views can be used to analyse the offset history throughout the
day, reveal sign-on/sign-off times, and jump directly to the time spots where
an interesting rising carrier levels are being observed. The normal
point-and-shoot functionality is available: when the mouse cursor is bright,
there is a recording available behind that spot, and clicking there brings the
user to that offset/time.
Users can repeat the MANUAL SCAN as many times as necessary for the same time
slot to achieve a higher resolution or for other time slots of the day. JAGUAR
keeps the scan data aligned in the correct order. However, if you are
interested in the offset history, it is highly recommended that you use
AUTOSCAN/MONITOR for "scanning made easy": everything is ready when you need
the offsets, no need to wait long scan jobs to complete. However you can always
run MANUAL SCANS afterwards using higher resolution for those interesting
times/frequencies seen in AUTOSCAN results.
HOW TO
You can jump to HOME from any display by
• Pressing the keyboard key W ("WALLPAPER") until HOME appears
• Pressing the keyboard key HOME
• Pressing the keyboard key E until HOME appears
• Clicking TOOLBAR > HOME
• Clicking SLIDER > SPECTRA
• Pressing ENTER > TOP MENU > SPECTRA > HOME
The extended spectrum display (JAGUAR PRO ONLY) can be opened by
• Using the ZOOMFRAME (appears visible when you move the mouse cursor to
the right edge of the screen => use mouse click or mouse wheel to select an
EXTENDED display)
• Pressing the keyboard key E (E toggles between HOME <> EXTENDED or
EXTENDED (DAY) - whichever was used last)
• Pressing ENTER > TOP MENU > SPECTRA > EXTENDED or EXTENDED
(DAY)
• Pressing ALT-E rotates all the spectrum screens
• Moving the mouse cursor to SLIDER > SPECTRA and using the mouse wheel
scroll, or the left/right arrow keys. Also, the left mouse click (zoom up) or
the right mouse click (zoom down) can be used.
When you have the mouse cursor over any spectrum screen, you can move the
spectrum location up/down on the screen by scrolling the mouse wheel or simply
by dragging.
SLIDER has two important controls for customising spectrum displays: STYLE
(STANDARD > GLOW > XRAY > XRAY+) and CONTRAST (spectrum colour
strength). See SLIDER for more details.
In today's MW DXing eyes are as important as ears, so the visual help given by
SPECTRA displays can save a lot of time when studying a huge number of
recordings. A typical way how to operate with the spectrum data is presented in
the following video (tnx JF!):
